Court sentences IGP to three months in prison

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to three months in prison for flouting a 2011 court order. The IGP’s committal followed a suit that was filed by a police officer, Patrick Okoli, who was unlawfully and compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Police Force.                          IGP Usman Baba The court also ordered the payment of N10 million to the applicant, being special and general damages for the unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional denial of his (Patrick’s) rights and privileges as a Senior Officer of the Nigeria Police Force from 1993 till date. Adeleke freezes govt accounts, reverses state name

The newly inaugurated Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has frozen all government accounts in the state. Adeleke directed this in his first executive order upon inauguration on Sunday. Adeleke, in his speech delivered at the inauguration, alleged that the erstwhile governor of the state, Adegboyega Oyetola, carried out some actions “maliciously” after he (Adeleke) won the July 16 governorship election, including “hurried” employments without provisions to sustain them. He claimed these actions were roadblocks channeled at making things difficult in his administration difficult. Osun: Adeleke, deputy take oath of office

The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke and his deputy, Kola Adewusi, have taken the oath of office and allegiance. The oaths were administered on both men by the Osun State Chief Judge, Adepele Ojo, at a well attended event. Adeleke came into the venue in a long convoy of vehicles at about 11:20am and completed taken his oath at about 11:50am. Present in the main bowl of Osogbo City Stadium to witness the event were dignitaries that included the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate and his running mate, Atiku Abubakar and Ifeanyi Okowa respectively, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Emmanuel Udom. INEC releases Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi gov election timetable

  The Independent National Electoral Commission has released timetable and schedule of activities for Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi state governorship elections. INEC Chairman. Prof. Mahmood Yakubu   This was contained in a statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC, Festus Okoye on Tuesday. INEC revealed that the governorship elections of these three states would hold on November 11, 2023. According to the Commission, this decision is in fulfillment of the requirement of Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 which mandates the Commission to publish the Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date fixed for the elections. Similarly, Sections 178(1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 mandates the Commission to conduct such elections not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the term of the last holder of the office.
